As I was preparing for the trip this summer, I wanted to do something special in the knitting department during the car rides as we traveled across 14 states in the US and Mexico. This adventure of a lifetime seemed like a perfect opportunity to also make some great knitting memories.
What I finally decided to do is to knit a hat for all my fellow "Westies" who are interested. I sent out an email to get an estimate for yarn to buy and made my largest yarn order to date-- over 40 skeins! I also prepared a document full of design ideas-- stitch patterns, color patterns, the works-- for each recipient to have a hand in the hat design process.
This is the first hat, for Kenzie. I knitted it while driving from Whitman's Johnston Wilderness Campus to our first stop in the Methow Valley in north-central Washington.
Kenzie chose a modern snowflake fair isle pattern for her hat. The yarn is Drops Karisma in Light Grey and Drops Lima in Green and Petrol, a combination of super wash wool and wool-alpaca blend.
Yarn: 1 skein (100m) Drops Karisma in 44 Light Grey (A), 0.5 skein (50 m) Drops Lima in 0705m Green (B), 0.05 skein (5 m) Drops Lima in 0701m Petrol (C)
Gauge: 21 stitches and 28 rows = 4 in (10 cm) in stockinette stitch
Finished size: fits adult head, 7" length, 21" circumference
Needles: US 2 double-pointed or short circular needle, US 6 double-pointed and 8 in (20 cm) circular needle
Other Materials Needed: stitch marker, yarn needle, ruler
CO 120 sts in A with US 2. Connect in the round and place stitch marker to mark the beginning of a round. Rib *K2, P2* for 2.25 inches (6 cm).
Switch to US 6 and decrease 24 stitches evenly around the round (*K3, k2tog*) = 96 sts. Knit one more round with A. Knit two rounds with C.
Work snowflake color pattern with A and B. Repeat chart three times for each round.
After completing color chart, knit two rounds with C.
|White = Color A; Green = Color B; Blue = Color C|
Knit rounds with A until piece measures 7 inches (18 cm) or desired length. Then work decreases:
Round 1: *K4, k2tog,* repeat * to * across round = 80 sts.
Round 2 and all even rounds: K across.
Round 3: *K3, k2tog,* repeat * to * across round = 64 sts.
Round 5: *K2, k2tog,* repeat * to * across round = 48 sts.
Round 7: *K1, k2tog,* repeat * to * across round = 32 sts.
Round 9: K2tog across round = 16 sts.
Round 11: K2tog across round = 8 sts.
Cut yarn end, leaving an 8 inch tail. Thread yarn needle and pass through remaining stitches and pull tight. Weave in yarn ends and enjoy!
